Hire VBMA
When you see “VBMA” listed on a graduate’s resume, what does that mean about the candidate?
The Veterinary Business Management Association (VBMA) is a national organization of students who believe that great veterinarians need more than just medical skills.
VBMA members pay annual dues to belong to an organization that gives them business education, networking opportunities, and helps them fulfill their personal and professional goals. Most students are involved on their local, chapter level where they attend meetings given throughout the year. Meetings cover a broad range of topics, this year school chapters across the nation created meetings with titles such as:
The Importance of Compliance
Conflict Resolution
Building Trust Through Better Communication
Electronic Medical Records
Business Demographics
As an organization we feel that learning business skills is essential to practicing compassionate medicine. For example, if a new graduate cannot communicate effectively to their staff, then mistakes will be made and patients will get hurt.
Membership in the VBMA introduces students to some of the important business issues in veterinary practice. It also introduces them to resources they can use to learn more business skills or solve business problems in the future. VBMA members have a head start in understanding the business realities of veterinary practice and the tools with which to face them.
Unfortunately there are still veterinary students who don’t feel that it is a sound investment of their time to learn business and communication skills. There are still some students who choose not to be members of the VBMA. Wouldn’t your practice benefit more from a veterinarian who already realized that these accessory skills were important?
If want to hire veterinarians who already know that there’s more to being a great vet than just the medicine and who have started learning what that is, make sure to look for the VBMA on their resume.
